Gourmet Caramel Apple Recipe - Women Living Well (1)

Wow! Look at these beautiful apples!!! I didn’t make them!!! But Janelle from Comfy in the Kitchen did and here’s what she wrote:

A very dear friend of mine asked if I would entertain the idea of making caramel apples with her! I had never made them before…but I am ALWAYS up for a food challenge, so of course I obliged! It may have helped that I absolutely LOVE caramel apples and I was up for some fellowship. We had a wonderful time together and made some pretty amazing apples! Here is our story….

(We multiplied the recipe for a bake sale, I am giving you a recipe for 6 apples- you may multiply as desired)

Here is the fun part…set up your “apple dressing buffet” We had nuts, crushed Butterfinger, white choc chips, mini M&Ms, melted chocolates, Heath, and marshmallows. (I would suggest to pick no more than 3 to start off with)

Prep time: 10 mins

Cook time: 40 mins

Total time: 50 mins

Serves: 6

Ingredients

  • 6 wooden skewers
  • 6 Medium Granny Smith (green apples)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup white corn syrup
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • desired toppings & parchment paper

Instructions

  1. In heavy saucepan combine sugar, corn syrup, milk and salt mixing well.
  2. Cook over medium heat stirring gently but constantly until soft ball stage (if you are using a thermometer, it will be about 230 degrees- but I go by color).
  3. This will take you about 30 mins.
  4. Remove from heat and cool for about 5 mins and stir in butter and vanilla.
  5. Cool again about 5 mins- you then may begin coating caramel over apples to cover fully…then dip in your desired topping.
  6. Place on buttered parchment paper…when finished with all apples, transport to dish and cool in refrigerator for 2 hours before enjoying!

Enjoy!

  1. Oh my goodness, these look so delicious — and I haven’t had a caramel apple yet this year. I do think it’s a prerequisite for the fall, though! Thank you so much for sharing your process and recipe! 🙂

  9. I love caramel apples, but have never made them and hardly ever buy them because the “gourmet” ones are so expensive. These look so simple and delicious. Since I have everything to do these, this will be a project with my 5-year old soon.

    1. In the caramel apple receipe you never mention when to add sweetened condensed milk. Only time sweetened condensed milk is mentioned is in the list of ingredients.

      1. Hi Darlene,

It’s in step one- when she says milk – she’s referring to the sweetened condensed milk.

        Hope that helps!

    1. The butter gets added with the vanilla when it is done cooking. It says that in the recipe.

  15. Any tips on storing these or how long they would be good for? I am having 20 6th, 7th and 8th graders coming over and I want to have these to snack on but I need to make them in advance. Thanks!

  16. I am a mother of 5 – 3 that I didn’t labor and 2 that I did. My 3 older step children have given us 5 beautiful grandchildren and then we have 2 younger children with my son, 9 years old, being the oldest of all of the young kids and grandkids, so you can only imagine how much fun we had with this recipe and apple dipping fun this past weekend. Thank you so much for sending this my way – the caramel sauce was SO EASY and yummy! The kids had a ball making their apples and dipping in their topping choice……it is definitely a yearly tradition in our house from now on!

  17. This brought back so many nice memories. Also, one very painful one. I volunteered to help do these for my daughter’s fall festival at school. I was working with another mother and we were both dipping apples at the same time when she touched my hand with her apple. I have scars to this day on those fingers where the skin was burned so badly. So DO NOT recommend that you let your children dip apples except one at a time , then with much supervision.

  18. I would suggest rolling the apples in boiling water to completely get the wax off..just use a slotted spoon to remove wax..roll them and taken them out!

  19. I have tried many different caramel apple recipes on line and the problem I have is that when I try to package them, they stick to the bag at room temperature. Is that what happens with all homemade caramel apples? I can’t wait to try your recipe, it looks so delicous.
