APPLES NEVER FALL is a new Peaco*ck miniseries with seven episodes that have all been released on the premiere day. It’s a drama, thriller, and mystery hybrid based on a Liane Moriarty (Big Little Lies) novel. If the author isn’t enough to get you intrigued, then the wonderful cast should do the trick!

We’ve watched the pilot episode for this review and will definitely be watching the rest of the series. Each episode focuses on a character, so we’ll be seeing events from more than one point of view. A personal favorite storytelling angle.

A wife and mother of four adults disappears

InApples Never Fall, we’re getting a character-driven storyline not unlike the one in Big Little Lies. Of course, I also mention that particular title because both are based on novels by Liane Moriarty. This one is aboutthe Delaney family matriarch’s disappearance.

This isn’t just any family, as everyone in West Palm Beach knows the Delaney family. They’ve been running a tennis academy for decades, but Joy and Stan have decided to retire. Figuring out what to do with all that extra time isn’t easy for either of them.

However, they never miss an opportunity to put pressure on their four children. If it isn’t about their career or relationships, it’s about their faults when playing a “friendly” game of tennis with dad. A former tennis pro, who now has a really bad knee and is very bitter about that.

Strangely, Stan doesn’t seem to wonder much when his wife, Joy, suddenly goes missing. And could it involve the young woman who arrived on their doorstep one night and somehow became part of the family? Joy’s four adult children are left to piece together everything.

And learn a lot of new details about their parents in the process.

What a cast!

As the Delaney matriarch, Joy Delaney, we see none other than the recent Oscar nominee for Nyad, Annette Bening. She is brilliant in this role and plays a big part in the “Then” parts of the series. In every episode we see “Then” and “Now” moments to help us tie everything together.

Her husband, former tennis pro, Stan, is portrayed by Sam Neill. The two have some serious banter (and actual arguments) that help us understand their relationship and the overall dynamic of the Delaney household.

The four adult children round out this core cast. Jake Lacy (A Friend of the Family) portrays the oldest son, Troy, who Joy describes as “her rock”. Essie Randles (The Speedway Murders) plays Brooke, who is about to get married to her girlfriend. She seems to be Dad’s favorite.

Then there’s Conor Merrigan Turner (Netflix series Thai Cave Rescue) as Logan, the son who loves boats and yoga much more than tennis. And finally, Alison Brie (The Rental) is Amy, the “searcher” of the family, who still has no purpose.

For the record, I have to mention that having two children with the names Brooke and Logan in succession seems like a hint to the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. One of the original and still current characters is “Brooke Logan” (Katherine Kelly Lang) and if that’s a coincidence, it’s a big one.

The showrunner of the Peaco*ck miniseries is Melanie Marnich with Chris Sweeney and Dawn Shadforth directing the seven episodes. As mentioned, it’s based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, who wroteBig Little LiesandNine Perfect Strangers.

Both have been adapted into series and one already had a season 2, whileNine Perfect Strangers has its second season on the way. While I enjoyedBig Little Liesthe most, I am findingApples Never Fallhits some of the same great notes. Whether this will last throughout the miniseries remains to be seen.

However, I already know that I will definitely be watching all the episodes. I’m simply too intrigued, and past experience with Liane Moriarty-based series has been overwhelmingly good. If you’re a fan of Liane Moriarty, then be sure to check this latest adaption out on Peaco*ck.
