If you’re looking for a fun cookie that can be enjoyed all year round, these Sprinkle Cookies are for you! Sprinkles make everything more fun, right??

These Sprinkle Cookies are perfectly soft cookies with tons of colorful sprinkles! They melt in your mouth with just the right amount of sweetness.

I have finally found something that makes grocery stores down here superior to what I left behind in Ohio. The three grocery stores that I cycle between down here all have freebies for kids- mainly in the form of cookies. Some have sugar cookies, others chocolate chip.

But Publix? Publix has sprinkle cookies.

I don’t know what it is with kids and sprinkles. I’m sure that I was like this when I was younger too, but Jonathan is just getting to the age where everything that has sprinkles on it is automatically superior in every way compared to the same item with no sprinkles.

I mean, I get it. They’re bright and fun and colorful. I assume they’re probably made of sugar. I couldn’t believe it when Jonathan chose sprinkle cookies over chocolate chip cookies when we were grocery shopping, but he does 100% of the time now.

But the other day, disaster struck. They were out of cookies. I’ll let you guess what kind of World War III level of devastation was displayed by my three year old whenthat sort of life-altering information was doled out.

I figured that I better just learn how to make some freakin’ sprinkle cookies.

So I Googled, and Smitten Kitchen came up. I have found that she pretty much knows what she’s talking about, and I really didn’t want to get into a whole “trial and error” baking session, so I used her recipe with some minor adaptations.

These were SO good. Pretty easy to mix up, Jonathan loved rolling the cookies in the sprinkles, and they stayed just soft enough.Jonathan loves them too, so now that we can have them at home, I’ll have to find another way to keep him excited about going to the store with me. Maybe the balloons…

Making these sprinkle cookies is really pretty simple. Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. While the oven is preheating, in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Next, add in the cream cheese, egg and extracts, and beat together until mixed, scraping down the sides of the bowl occasionally. Sprinkle the salt, baking powder and baking soda over top and stir in.

Once those ingredients are combined, mix in the flour until just combined, being careful not to over mix. Over mixing causes the cookies to be tough, and no one likes tough cookies!

After you’ve made the dough, line two baking sheets with parchment paper and pour the sprinkles into a bowl. Scoop up a ball of dough (approximately two tablespoons of dough) and roll between your hands into a two inch ball. Roll the ball of cookie dough in the sprinkles to coat, then place on the baking sheet.

Repeat these steps with the remaining dough balls, making sure to space them approximately 2 inches apart. Use a glass to flatten the cookies until they are half an inch tall.

After you’ve rolled all the dough, bake the cookies in the preheated oven for approximately 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool on the cookie sheet.

These sprinkle cookies are a nice change up from the traditional red and green cookies you see during the holiday season! They’re great for adding to cookie trays, or just keeping around the house to snack on! If you do keep them at home, be sure to store them in an airtight container.

FAQs

Do you put sprinkles on before or after baking cookies? ›

You can also try adding sprinkles to your cookies before baking, but depending on the recipe, they may melt in the oven.

What is the secret to soft cookies? ›

Baking cookies quickly in a hot oven – at 375 degrees F as opposed to a lower temperature – will make for soft results. They'll bake fast instead of sitting and drying out in the oven's hot air. Ever so slightly underbaking your cookies will give you softer results than cooking them the full amount the recipe says.

How do I get sprinkles to stick to my cookies? ›

The easiest thing to do is to brush the tops of the cookies with a little bit of water or milk, to dampen the cookie dough. This will help the sprinkles stick without changing the appearance of the cookie. You can also use a little egg white.

What kind of sprinkles do you use for cookies? ›

The best sprinkles to use on foods are jimmies or nonpareils. Jimmies and nonpareils are an assortment of small shapes, colors, and sizes that change baked goods' appearance when sprinkled on top. The other types of sprinkles described above can be added to different desserts like cakes and cookies.

Do you put sugar sprinkles on before baking? ›

You have to put the sprinkles on before baking cookies, so they will stick, unless you're going to frost them, in which case the sprinkles go after the frosting.

How do you make cookies soft instead of hard? ›

Use more egg yolks and less egg whites. Egg yolks add moisture to the dough, while egg whites can make cookies drier and crunchier. Add a bit of cornstarch to the dough. Cornstarch helps to absorb moisture and keep cookies soft and tender.

How do you make cookies stay soft and chewy? ›

The key to keeping cookies fresh and soft is to seal them in an airtight container, like a resealable freezer bag. And here's a nifty little trick: add a piece of bread to the bag.

What can I use to make sprinkles stick? ›

Use a damp surface: One of the best ways to get sprinkles to stick is to use a damp surface. Before you add your sprinkles, lightly mist the frosting or glaze with a spray bottle filled with water. This will help the sprinkles adhere better.

Do you put sprinkles on brownies before or after baking? ›

If you dust the top of brownie batter with sprinkles just before baking, the sprinkles slightly sink into the batter and remain in position after baking. Alternatively, incorporate sprinkles with wet batter to include them in the brownie's center.

Do sprinkles for cookies go bad? ›

A.: Colored sugar, sprinkles and other similar cookie decorations have an indefinite shelf life, as they are made of pure sugar for the most part.

Can you egg wash sugar cookies? ›

Add a Little Shine (or a Little Crunch!) One of my simplest sugar cookie tricks is to brush the surface of the cookie with a little egg wash. Using an egg wash made from whole egg will lightly brown the surface during baking—it becomes a little more shortbread-like in texture as a result.

Why do my cookies get hard after they cool? ›

Cookies begin losing moisture through evaporation from the moment that they come out of the oven. So it's totally normal for them to harden up a bit. Yet, this is why you need to store them in an airtight container once they completely cool or they will continue to lose moisture.

What determines the moistness of a cookie? ›

Butter contributes milk solids and water to a cookie, both of which soften it. Brown sugar contributes molasses – again, a softener. Using lower-moisture sugar (granulated) and fat (vegetable shortening), plus a longer, slower bake than normal, produces light, crunchy cookies.

What makes a hard cookie soft? ›

The best way to soften up those hard cookies is something you probably already have in your kitchen… bread! That's right, a piece of fresh bread will make those tough treats soft and chewy.
