This brown sugar candied bacon recipe is delicious!Bacon on it’s own is great but, this recipe takes it up a notch. The flavor combination ofthe salty bacon, warmlysweetfrom the brown sugar and a kick of spicy chili powder and your taste buds will be thrilled!Try this candied bacon on your favorite sandwich, burger or crumble in your salad. For a little something different when cooking pancakes, crumble cooked baconinthe batter. Yum!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound thick-cut bacon
  • 1.5 cups brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons spicy chili powder

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Line a large baking sheet with two layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil and place a rack over the top.
  3. Mix the brown sugar and chili powder together in a large bowl
  4. Dredge the bacon in the sugar mixture. Press the sugar into the bacon so that you get a nice, thick coating on both sides.
  5. Lay the bacon in a single layer on your prepared pan. Try not to let the sides touch, which prevents the pieces from sticking together.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes and remove from the oven.
  7. Carefully flip the bacon over and sprinkle with a little extra brown sugar.
  8. Bake for an additional 10-12 minutes or until the bacon is dark brown but not burnt.
  9. As soon as the bacon comes out of the oven, remove it from the pan and lay in on brown paper bags to drain. It will stick to paper towels. Alternately, you could lay it on another clean rack and allow the excess grease to drain off that way.
  10. The bacon will firm up quickly as the sugar cools and gets crispy.

Notes:

I use a smoked chili powder, which has a medium heat level and a nice hint of smokiness. That said, any chili powder will work fine, and the heat is optional. If you’re making this for kids, you might want to leave the heat out all together.

You could play around with different spices to make this even more fun!

If you remove the bacon from the oven too soon, it will be chewy and not crisp, so be sure to let it get good and brown. That said, watch it closely once you flip it. All ovens are different and yours might not take as long.

I’ve found the best way to clean the rack is to soak it in boiling water. I actually start a pot when I put the last batch of bacon in, so clean up is quick and easy while the bacon cools.

Yields about 8 thick slices.

Store the bacon: Candied bacon can be kept in the fridge for a few days and reheats well in a skillet over low heat. You can wrap your food in raw bacon and then cook both together. If the main food is done first you can turn the food on its side so that the bacon is now touching the grate so that you can crisp it up. But make sure and this is important, to turn down that heat to about 375-400.

How to make crispy melt in your mouth bacon? ›

I preheat my oven to 400 degrees. Lay a cooling rack (or any wire rack) over the top of a sheet pan, and lay the bacon across the wire rack (this allows the fat/grease to drain off as it cooks). I bake it for anywhere from 15 or 20 min-ish, depending on how crispy and well done I want it.

Why doesn't homemade bacon get crispy? ›

Bacon should always be put into a cold pan and heated from there. In addition, draining the fat is a requirement. It's difficult to get bacon crispy if it's sitting in liquid bacon fat. In a microwave or in an oven this isn't a problem (I put bacon on a draining pan in the oven), but you have to remove fat from a pan.
