Those recipe-introduction lines up there make me sound like the most annoyingcar salesman. Or, recipe salesman, in this case.
My husband sells cars… I hope he’s not this annoying. 😉

HI, Friends! What’s goin’ on?Are you suiting up for the weekend? Just a few more hours and you’ll get to flop onto that couch and Facebook-all-the-people for the next 48 hours!

Oh, hey. Remember that one time when we didn’t have Facebook? Like, the times when your little cousin was YOUR LITTLE COUSIN and you didn’t have to know everything about her teenage life via the duck-face pictures onyour Facebook news feed??

Or, or, when your child’s teacher was just a teacher and you didn’t even know that she had a first name, but thanks to Facebook, she has a firstname ANDshe drinks beer on the weekends?! Remember those days before you knew all this stuff? WOW. That was thelife.
At least all my duck face pictures are on a polaroid… and in my possession, only.

And, and, how about that one time when you baked sliced apples in the microwave and ate all the apple chips??
I felt like the healthiest being on the planet.

So, I don’t have patience. I know that baking apple chips for hours on end, in the oven, and letting them dry just a little bit longer is the correct way to go about this apple-chip biznass, but I just can’t.I’m as anxious as a child on early Christmas morning. I want all the things, and I want them now.Stat.

Look at the yellow tint up there… What a beautiful action shot! 😛
BUT, that picture serves a purpose, and it’s described in two words; SINGLE LAYER. Remember those words…

Just minutes after coming home from the Apple Orchard last weekend, I was slaving over the mandoline, trying to save my fingers while slicing my Honeycrisps. Without adding a single crystal of sugar, nor a drop of cinnamon, I popped them in the microwave oven and within minutes, I had my fix. It was wonderful.

Healthy. Crispy. Fall-y.
Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Vegan, Vegetarian… I got it all covered.

You should totally make some while thinking about what to do with all them apples.
Then, you should totally come back in a day or two and see what else I did with them apples!

Happy Weekend!

ENJOY!

Prep Time 3 minutes mins

Cook Time 7 minutes mins

Total Time 10 minutes mins

Ingredients

  • Apples , washed and dried

Instructions

  • Cut off the ends of an apple, core out the middle (I don't), and thinly slice into 1/8-inch rounds. This is best done with a Mandoline Slicer, but you can also use a sharp knife.

  • Line a microwave safe plate with parchment paper.

  • Place a few apple slices on parchment paper in one single layer. (You will have to do this in batches.)

  • Microwave for 4.5 to 5 minutes, or until edges of apples start to curl up.

  • Flip each slice and continue to microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until edges are crisp.

  • Remove from microwave and let stand 10 minutes, or until crispy and dry.

  • Serve immediately.

Notes

All microwaves are different; start watching the apples at about the 4-minute mark until you can determine the proper time needed to bake the apples in your microwave. If the apples are small, about 2-inches in diameter, decrease the time by 1-minute. RECIPE SOURCE: DIETHOOD

    FAQs

Why are my dehydrated apples not crispy? ›

Why are my dehydrated apples not crispy? This means you haven't dehydrated your homemade apple chips for long enough. You can place them back into your dehydrator for longer.

How long does it take to dry apple chips? ›

Arrange apple slices in a single layer on dehydrator trays, ensuring there is space between pieces to allow airflow. Dehydrate at 135F/57C for 6-12 hours, until dry (see note 1).

Do you have to soak apples before dehydrating? ›

Treat apples before drying to prevent excessive browning. The treatments also help to preserve the flavor and vitamins of the fruit. The simplest pre-treatment is to soak freshly cut slices for 10 minutes in a solution of one part bottled lemon juice to one part water.

How many apples in a bag of bare chips? ›

Each 15-gram bag of bare fruit chips contains three granny smith apples. Get healthy. All natural. No added sugar.

Should dehydrated apples be chewy or crispy? ›

1 Answer. It's just how long you dry them. Thin apple slices work best for crunchy chips and then just dry them till they're crunchy - sometimes as much as 18-20 hours. Soft, chewy dehydrated apples just go for a shorter time.

How do you know if apples are dehydrated enough? ›

    Drying (dehydrator)

Allow 6 to 12 hours for apple slices to dry. Test for dryness. Remove a few slices from the dryer and wait a few minutes until cool. Apples are dry when they are pliable and no beads of moisture form when pressed between your fingers.

How do you know when apple crisp is done? ›

Bake the apple crisp until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown and crisp, about 45 minutes. Serve the crisps warm with vanilla bean ice cream or fresh whipped cream, if desired.

What apples are best to dehydrate for apple chips? ›

The best apples for dehydrating don't need much embellishment. If you want crisp dehydrated apple chips for snacking, choose tart types of apples like Granny Smith, Macintosh, Cortland, or Jonagolds. They're lower in sugar and thus have a sharper flavor and hold their shapes well.

Are dried apple chips healthy? ›

Dried Apples are among the healthiest and most convenient of dried fruits. Dried apples possess many of the same health-giving properties as fresh apples. It may come as a surprise to learn just how widely available dried apples are nowadays.

Is it better to dehydrate apples with or without skin? ›

You could if you'd like, but it's completely optional. The apple peels hold a lot of flavor and nutrition, so I hardly ever peel my apples for anything, except if they're very dirty. I don't peel them before drying either, but you could. I assume they would dry faster if peeled.

Do you need lemon juice to dehydrate apples? ›

To air dry apples, you'll want to remove the stem and core them. Then, mix them in a lemon juice-water mixture to prevent them from turning really brown during the drying process.

Can you dehydrate apples with the skins on? ›

I prefer peeling the apples because I find that dried apple skins aren't very pleasant. Slicing them into rings creates a more uniform thickness, which helps them dry evenly. Some folks like to pretreat the slices by dunking them in a lemon or citric acid bath before drying – but I find this step unnecessary.

How many apples in a 5 lb bag? ›

3 medium sized apples equal 1 lb. 1 lb peeled and sliced apples equals 2 3/4 c. 1/2 peck of apples equals 5 - 6 lb or 12 - 15 medium sized apples.

What do you eat with bare apple chips? ›

    Easy Snacking

Bare snacks are so versatile - try all the fun ways to eat them. Enjoy straight out of the bag, toss into salads, mix into yogurt, sprinkle over oatmeal, pair with cheddar or brie, or dip in your favorite nut butter.

How long do bare apple chips last? ›

Our apple chips are guaranteed fresh for up to one year in a sealed bag. Our coconut and banana chips are guaranteed fresh for up to 15 months in a sealed bag. Feel free to stock up!

Why is my dehydrated fruit not crunchy? ›

Make sure foods are well dehydrated

Some items, like pineapple are still going to feel a little bit sticky even when dehydrated properly. If your dehydrated food feels soft, spongy, or sticky it's probably not dehydrated enough. Put the product back in for additional time. Hard and crunchy or breakable pieces are done.

How do you dehydrate apples to crisp? ›

Turn on the dehydrator to 150-155 degrees F. (You may need to adjust this temp depending on your food dehydrator's tendancies.) Dry for 6-10 hours (or more), until apple slices are dry and crispy as desired.

Why is my dehydrated fruit chewy? ›

Similar to dried fruit, dehydrated fruit is fruit that has had its water content removed, via a slow evaporation process or using gentle heat. Through dehydration, fruits become thin, dense and chewy.
